If you suffer from back pain, please read this!
(In case you’re wondering, I snapped this dog in India doing this lovely back stretch and have been waiting for an opportunity to use it. As I’m talking about backs, I thought it might be appropriate.)
Did you see the various articles about back pain in the media yesterday? I was also interested to hear Professor Martin Underwood from Warwick University talking on the radio about this who said current approaches to dealing with back pain are failing.
The Lancet has said lower back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and back pain costs the country billions of pounds each year. More emphasis it seems should be placed on prevention and keeping moving.
Even the NHS guidelines say that most lower back pain responds to simple exercise and psychological therapy aimed at keeping people active.
I could not let this news slip by without commenting as this is exactly what yoga can provide for us all!!!
Yoga tailored to you as an individual can provide simple and gentle exercise. (For those of you that say you are not flexible enough, please let go of any notions about wrapping your feet around the neck or other forms of outrageous pretzel shapes that you may associate with yoga!).
Yoga tailored to you as an individual works on your whole being, holistically. It treats the body and mind as one, because that is what each of us is. A human being.
Yoga can provide simple exercise which strengthens the body and tools to calm the mind and ways to help deal with pain. It can also help us to get to know our body and mind better, to develop better awareness of both, which helps us to develop an understanding of why we may have that back pain in the first place!
If you are interested, please get in touch.
Love & light
